With the passage of time, Pop Up Campers are becoming more common because they are smaller than a traditional travel trailer and more than a tent. These are collapsible recreational vehicle types that offer you easy storage and lighter traveling experiences.
You can tow them by using almost any tow vehicles such as a mid-sized car or an SUV; you don’t need to invest in a truck or any other powerful vehicle.
Don’t you think this reason alone is enough to justify their popularity among the camping nerds?

Pop Up Campers usually offer you a mass area with mattresses for sleeping. Additionally, you may find a kitchen, bathroom, or shower system as well. Besides, in comparison to the fifth wheel and other heavy trailers, these can be packed in a lighter and compact state to carry.
With the morale, there are numerous pop-up camper models available on the market and it’s a top reason to get confused regarding which is the most suitable one for your use. A good quality pop up camper will cost you some money but it will last longer too.
Therefore, we have developed this article in which we present you with the best pop up campers and their brands. You don’t have to spend a lot to get your hands on a great camper that delivers value and recreation. To get more details, keep reading on!
Physical Attributes of Pop Up Campers
Compared to heavy RV trailers that have a weight range starting from 5,000 pounds, pop up campers are marginally lighter. They weight anywhere around 700 to 4000 pounds. This is the primary reason a standard SUV is suitable to pull them. It also does not take a hit on your fuel mileage.
These camping trailers usually have a trailer frame that offers a strong structure to the entire tent. A hard roof is usually present for a sturdy build of the camper. The mattresses are available in pull-out bunk styles. Usually, the walls are considered ‘soft’ as they are made up of canvas, vinyl, or other similar material. Overall, it is like owning a reinforced camping tent. Often, you can find windows in the tents that have screens.
As far as the size goes, most tents have a length ranging between 8 to 16 feet. However, box length is usually half of what the tent can usually extend to. The width of the tents is around 7 to 8 feet, and the height is generally shorter, on an average of 4 to 6 feet. Correlatively, the high wall models are generally taller in size. Overall, these tent campers can hold 4 to 8 people comfortably.
Types of Pop Up Camper
There are primarily four types of pop up campers. Some variations might combine two of them together, or offer a lightweight tent trailer of the same type. However, by the standards, these four can categorize all types of pop up campers:
Tent Trailers
If you’re looking for an authentic sensation of sleeping in a tent, these trailers are perfect. They are light and usually have canvas walls to expand upon. They are highly versatile and easy to set up. If you know how tents work, these are perfect for you. You can place them on the roadside or deeper in the woods and enjoy your stay.
High Wall Campers
These small tent trailers come with fiberglass walls, usually. They have expandable walls that open upwards to provide you space and have a stronger frame. High wall campers are identical to tent trailers but tend to be more sturdy. Therefore, they are slightly heavier too. It is easier to set them up compared to tent trailers.
A-Frame Trailers
These trailers usually have a sturdy structure and require minimal to no efforts in setting up. You can easily tow it with any car or SUV. However, they are usually less spacious than the other models on the list and can offer space for up to two people. They are easy to pack, as well. It is a perfect selection for those who don’t seek much interior space and only need it for sleep or safe-stay at night.
Teardrops Camper
This is where you start to leave the spectrum of ‘pop up campers’ and begin moving into heavier RV selection. These campers usually come in a teardrop shape and have more amenities than other trailers, such as an additional kitchen. Here, you will start paying according to the luxuries you opt for. They almost come with all options like that of RV, like electric connection and such. They almost feel like a compact home.

› Pros and Cons of pop up campers
The benefits of having a pop-up camper
Having a pop-up camper can pave way for a lot of exclusive benefits. Pop up campers are just like RVs, except they’re smaller and have different functions. Mostly, they are used for transporting sports goods and camping equipment. They are best for frequent campers and not for long-term residential use. The following are a few benefits of having a pop-up camper:
- More freedom and aesthetic scenery
An RV can restrict the view and your freedom. But with a pop-up camper, the stars have never looked bolder. Camping in the day has its own joy to it, but camping in the night brings a whole different charisma.
With pop up campers, the experience increases tenfold. Campers are more flexible and allowed for a lot of movement and activities. You can cook, barbecue, and enjoy the view of them. They are much more versatile than RVs.
- Easy airflow and ventilation
Airflow is a major problem in living inside a moving house. With a tent trailer, you can open the screens on either side. This makes for the perfect canopy that allows both sunlight and fresh cool air. Artificial ventilation is a thing of the past. With pop up campers, you get twice the natural airflow and a tranquilizing environment.
RVs and other hard-shelled trailers don’t have this feature. The most you can get in terms of ventilation are a few windows and sunroofs. Other than that, most RVs are closed and use some other method of ventilation. Natural light and airflow are important for a healthy body and mind.
- Larger person capacity
Although not as big as RVs, pop up campers and tent trailers can accommodate quite a lot of people. Some models can carry up to 10 people. This is perfect for an extended family or a large friend circle.
Other shorter models can sleep 8 people at a time, which is still enough for small and medium-sized families. These trailers feature king and double-sized beds, along with retractable benches. Sleeping inside these trailers is peaceful and relaxing. Especially with natural airflow, the cool night will keep you fast asleep.
- Towing ease
The fourth benefit of owning a pop-up camper is that these trailers are easier to tow and transport. Towing trucks can easily attach their bars to the camper’s rear end.
Moreover, you don’t even need a heavy-duty towing truck for these trailers. Even a minivan with a mediocre tow bar can do the job. This reduces expenses on both towing equipment and pickup trucks. A smaller towing vehicle also means lesser fuel consumption. So you get three benefits from just one feature.
- Smaller size, More compact
The smaller size accounts for the towing ease as well as storage capabilities. With an RV, you need a place to park it. Trailer and RV parks can be expensive to afford. And most likely you have to pay someone else to store your RV for you. However, with pop up campers, the vehicle can be easily stored in your own backyard or garage. It’s easy to store and doesn’t cost extra on storage space.
- Mostly waterproof
Last but not least, most campers are waterproof. This means that they can survive the rain and the elements. Dirt, mud, water- you’ll see none of that inside pop up campers. It’s a running myth that a camper tent can’t hold all of the water.
In fact, if the fabric is nicely seamed, the water can’t go inside. Of course, faulty tents and bad manufacturing can lead to a few leaks. But if done properly, nothing can come between you and your luxurious outing. This is just one more reason why we’re in love with pop up campers.
The downsides of a pop-up camper
Of course, pop up trailers have their downsides as well. While we rank them above RVs and trailer homes, there are some features that lower their status. Downsides of pop up campers include lower storage space, less power, and lack of basic amenities. These are as follows:
- Lack of amenities
The lack of amenities is the first thing that ranks campers below RVs. An RV has comfortable sleeping quarters and a running supply of water and electricity. It even has a fully functional kitchen and living room.
However, with pop up campers, the facilities are diminished. Most kitchens only have a few drawers and cabinets. And the sink usually has low water pressure. Faucets and toilets can be very slow at work. Moreover, although designed for 10 people, a camper hardly has 3-4 beds. This means most people end up sleeping on the floor or on the couch.
- Sleeping conditions and temperature
As mentioned earlier, you might end up sleeping on the floor in a pop-up camper. However, that’s not the only discomfort. Most floors of a camper are made of vinyl. This means the floor will be exceptionally stiff and hard to sleep on.
Moreover, the vinyl can absorb a lot of heat, leading to higher temperatures in the day. In the night, the floor can become cool, which is uncomfortable in the winter. As opposed to that, RVs usually have more beds or convertible couches. And they keep excessive heat and cold away from the users.
- Lower customization
Pop up trailers come with lesser customization than RVs and Motorhomes. This makes it very important to ensure your camper has everything pre-installed. So you won’t have to keep adding things. Pop up campers don’t really have much to add. They already have little to no room for accessories. And since RVs are more popular, their accessories can be harder to find.
- Less storage space
This can be an issue with pop up campers. RVs and giant motor homes can house a ton of things. They have enough space for beds, closets, television, tables, and sinks. But a pop-up camper has lesser versatility. It features basic necessities such as a sink, bathroom, cable, and the lights.
But with all of this, there will be no space for extra baggage. The cargo section already has a lesser storage space. While some campers provide more space than others, they can’t beat RVs in the overall capacity.
- Less power and strength
Campers use lesser fuel. This can mean more fuel efficiency. But it also means lesser engine power. Most pop up campers end up stuck in places that only a powerful engine can pull them out of. Towing them to a truck or a jeep and pulling them out is the only suitable way. Reduced engine power can mean a lot of issues with speed and mobility.

You can have the comfort of sleeping at your home in the travel trailer. Travel trailers are constructed with hard walls which make you feel protected and secure. You are able to save the hotel reservation cost if you buy a luxurious travel trailer.
If you want short camping trips, an optimal pop-up camper serves your purpose. However, if you want to enjoy the luxurious experience of camping for a long vacation, a travel trailer is a good choice for you.

Very nice review of pop ups.
Thank you
With the title of Best Popup campers I would enter another model for consideration.
The Somerset Utah model is an excellent and high quality camper.
It is even more rugged than our previous Coleman Fleetwood Carmel model.
In visiting other brands and RV shows and camp sites the Somerset is very well made of quality materials. They are not cheap but you get what you pay for!
Thanks
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for sharing your opinion & thoughts here. We really appreciate. We would love to review few more pop up campers very soon! Will definitely study The Somerset Utah model as well. Happy Camping
Thanks
I’ve noticed that you do not recommend the Rockwood pop up camper high wall series. I’ve owned Jayco’s starcraft’s palominos and Coleman’s and the Rockwood highwall is my favorite hands down. I also own a travel trailer and prefer the Rockwood pop up series to any of the ones you recommend. When I bought my Rockwood highwall I sat in an A-frame trailer and it felt like I was camping in my bathroom, too small. While the Rockwood was $18,000 out the door, it has every option that my travel trailer has except for a television, that includes air conditioning. These trailers might be fine for a weekend or so but if you camp for weeks at a time like I do the Rockwood will more than pay for itself after 5 to 10 years. I am just curious why you did not recommend the Rockwood pop up series.
